we are in the business of helping authors like you find their voice, polish their idea, and tell their story.
What story do you have to tell?
Firesong Arts is a developmental support service for creative writers. Through a combination of coaching, editing, workshops, seminars, and general writing assistance, we help writers go from a vague story concept to a fully-realized published work of literature.
Since our inception, the focus of Firesong Art's services has been on helping emerging and experienced authors alike polish their ideas and tell their stories. Not everyone has the resources or know-how to get their work published traditionally. Whether it's finding an agent, hooking a big publishing house, or even just self-publishing an e-book, it can be a very daunting process. Firesong Arts was created to help guide you through the process in order to reach your publishing goals.
Through open dialogue and frequent communication with you, our editors and coaches are able to ensure that any editing made to your manuscript is precisely what you want. We work hard to uphold the integrity of the piece, and to ensure that your style and voice are maintained. We are not here to change your story, only to help you, the author, make the story the best it can be.
Every story deserves to be told, from the shortest short story to the great epic novel. Firesong Arts is here to help make that story shine.
"To get the right word in the right place is a rare achievement" - Mark Twain
What Is Developmental Editing?
Developmental editing is the process of taking an undeveloped or underdeveloped idea, and turning it into a story. Sometimes this means bashing an idea over the head until it looks nothing like it originally did, and sometimes it means tweaking a few points here and there for clarification or continuity. The truth of a story is it's concept, everything else is dressing. Firesong Arts is here to help you develop your story into the best version of itself.
Uncovering and refining a concept can be a trying process, particularly if you're attached to a draft. As writers ourselves, we have been through plenty of blocks in our own work, and know how much it hurts to see your babies ripped to shreds by some unfeeling editor. Luckily for you, that's exactly what we don't do here. We strive to make the process a worthwhile experience for everyone involved, and to make sure that you get what you want out of your work. When your vision meets our expertise, beautiful works are created.
Can coaching work for you?
Have you always wanted to be a writer? Do you have a story idea that you want to write, but you have no idea where to start? Have you written something, even published it before but you just aren't happy with it? Do you have several half-finished manuscripts that you keep promising yourself that you'll come back to?
If you do, then you're not alone. Everyone has a story to tell, but most of us have no idea where to start or how to go about getting our story out there. Developmental editing and coaching is simple the process of helping you overcome these blocks so that you can tell the story you want to tell.
We have been there. One of the best tools a writer has in their toolbox is community. Even if it's just someone to bounce ideas off of, or help you clarify your vision, having someone to lean on to encourage you, support you, and help you is essential to any writer. Firesong Arts was created specifically to help writers like you, because we are writers like you.
Meet your Editor
Since 2005, I have been working with authors, helping them to develop their stories and ideas into viable manuscripts for publication.
After a few years of this kind of developmental editing, I began to notice that much of my time was spent just talking with writers about the challenges they have had to overcome in their writing. Many of which were the same as my own! It began to dawn on me that perhaps no matter the genre, style, format, or intention of a given piece, all writers suffer similar challenges, and I want to help them.
I have always believed that authorship is something that should belong to anyone, not just the privileged few with the greatest agent, or the right contacts in the publishing business. It has always been my dream to see new talent flourish, and I created Firesong Arts for just that reason.
